What is Art and Why Does is Matter

Updated: Jan 29

For the longest time, even now when we think about art, it is often limited to the small world of painting and drawing. Although these are forms of art they are only a minute portion of what the vastness of what art is and can be.

According to, art “is a highly diverse range of human activities engaged in creating visual, auditory, or performed artifacts that express the author’s imaginative or technical skill, and are intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power”. From this definition and the development of art from formalism to more conceptual and contemporary, we can see how almost anything can be termed art!

With this in mind, art to me is a tool we can use to express ourselves, channel our emotions, evoke emotion, ask hard questions, answer hard questions, challenge the status quo, tap into the unseen and so much more.

As a matter of fact we’re able to find the value of art not only in its beauty, but in its reach and its impact, we see this in how the hurting are able to find healing, how the voiceless are given a voice and the ability to see the world not only as it is but as it could be. We’re given a language, a means to communicate and we’re also given a mirror, a way in which to see ourselves as individuals and a society at large.

With this understanding let us CREATE the world we want to see, let us phakama, rise up and empower ourselves and others through our creativity!
